Introduction
While we wind down for a festive season to be spent in varying degrees of separation and uncertainty, we of course have one eye on the new year and the hope of brighter things to come.
With that in mind, we invite you to join us in seeking solace in the famous predictability of capital markets. On Thursday 7 January, we will be in conversation with Mark Makepeace and James Ashton to discuss FTSE: The Inside Story, which explores the deals, dramas, and political upset that revolutionised the City.
From our discussion we hope to glean insights for the future from those at the helm of one of Britain’s most successful brands, one which brought order to the financial system, while keeping pace with relentless change and innovation.
The discussion will take place under the Chatham House Rule via Zoom on Thursday 7 January 2020 at 3pm and we ask that you RSVP via the following link. Speaking with Mark and James will be Katie Stanton, associate partner, who will pose some short introductory questions before chairing the audience Q&A. We expect to have finished proceedings by 4pm.
James Ashton
James Ashton is a senior financial journalist who has covered some of the biggest economic and corporate stories of recent times. He was city editor and executive editor of the Evening Standard and Independent titles and before that city editor of The Sunday Times. Today he is a business commentator and interviewer for the Telegraph and Times and produces his own influential leadership podcast, ‘Leading with James Ashton’.
MARK MAKEPEACE
Mark Makepeace offers a unique perspective on the financial services industry. During a 35-year career he was founding chief executive of FTSE International and turned a small UK start-up into one of the largest and most successful global index providers – and one of Britain’s most famous brands. In 1985, he arrived in the City at the London Stock Exchange as a clerk to co-ordinate Big Bang – and never left. He recently stepped down as chief executive of FTSE Russell and from his role as executive director responsible for the LSE’s information services division.
